JOB SUMMARY

Assists the pharmacists in providing medications to patients and patient care areas in a safe, efficient and timely manner.  Understands the needs of a patient population that includes neonates, infants, pediatrics, adolescents, adults and geriatrics.  Monitors and maintains the clerical duties within the department.  Prepares intravenous admixtures, unit dose formulations and compounded medications using aseptic technique.  Obtains medication histories and patient allergies from relevant sources for new patients coming through the Emergency Department and processes this information in the Electronic Health Record (EHR).  Directly communicates to pharmacist about patients with complex/high-risk medications.  Enters charges and credits on patient accounts.  Orders, receives and stocks the pharmacy medications in a timely and accurate manner.  Adheres to organizational policies and procedures; regulatory/accrediting body requirements; and professional practice standards.    Performs all tasks under the personal supervision of a registered pharmacist.

 

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs all duties under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist.
  • Fills patient drug orders timely and accurately.
  • Prepares sterile and non-sterile extemporaneous liquids and solids.
  • Individualizes accurate doses of medications prescribed for patients.
  • Understands and uses the computer system(s) to accurately reflect patient billing of pharmaceuticals.
  • Documents and fills narcotic requisitions.
  • Prepares intravenous admixtures using aseptic technique.
  • Makes rounds to the patient care areas.
  • Removes and properly eliminates expired medications.
  • Performs daily billing and reporting duties.
  • Logs into computer at the patient bedside to input patient medication and allergy history.
  • Ability to communicate with patients of all education levels in an Emergency Department setting.
  • Provide complete information regarding each medication identified and ensure complete medication / allergy information documentation.
  • Receives direction from staff pharmacist, coordinator or director and responds appropriately.
  • Orders medications from wholesaler in a cost effective and timely manner.
  • Receives order and restocks the pharmacy.
  • Assists in the orientation of new personnel and students.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of disaster/emergency procedures and responds appropriately.
  • Assumes responsibility and accountability for individual knowledge, skills, performance and behavior in accordance with hospital, division and department standards of care and policies and procedures.
  • Utilizes measures to promote and maintain patient, visitor and personnel safety.
  • Maintains patient, employee, physician and organization confidentiality; respects the rights, privacy and property of others.

Requirements Include

 

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or possesses a certificate of high school equivalent (Must be 18 years of age or older based on Ohio law)
  • Current registration as a Pharmacy Technician in the State of Ohio or eligible.
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certification required. 

 

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Knowledge of basic pharmacy calculations, medical terminology and aseptic technique.
  • Successful completion of mandatory requirements including, but not limited to, departmental competencies.
  • Demonstration of effective problem-solving, decision-making, interpersonal and team work skills.
  • Demonstration of positive customer service.
  • Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to concentrate and remain focused despite multiple interruptions.
  • Ability to navigate EHR and enter new medication history or update existing medication history
  • Knowledge of brand and generic medication names, common dosages, dosage forms and frequency of administration of each medication.
