Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry, or DEXA, is the preferred technique for measuring bone mineral density. A patient must lie still on a table for a few minutes to complete a DEXA scan.
Patient Preparation Instructions
- Please do not have a DEXA scan if you have had an oral contrast study in the last 48 hours.
- Please do not take calcium supplements 24 - 48 hrs prior.
- It is best to wear comfortable clothing, preferably no metal (zipper) at waist and no under-wire bra.
