Back pain is a common chronic condition that affects 8 out of every ten adults during their lifetime.

These statistics encourage us to learn how to prevent back injuries, which are essential for overall health and well-being.

Six key steps to avoid back injuries are:

  • Frequent position changes: Sitting in one position for a long time increases your back stress. Change positions often, move, take a walk, and allow breaks from repetitive activities.
  •  Pushing/Pulling: Stand up straight and push whenever possible to reduce stress on your back.
  •  Footwear: Wear well-supported shoes, such as tennis shoes, and buy new shoes often. Note that shoes with heels increase stress on your legs and back.
  •  Good body mechanics for lifting: Bend your knees, keep your back straight, and keep the load close to your body. If you must turn, pivot with your feet and do not twist your back.
  •  Proper posture: Standing straight and tall with your shoulders back when on your feet. Keep your feet shoulder-width apart and keep your head in line with your body (think of balancing a book on your head).

If sitting, make sure both of your feet rest flat on the floor. Do not cross your legs. Your knees should be behind your ankles. Make sure that your upper back and neck stay comfortably straight and that your shoulders are relaxed.

  • Regular exercise: Exercising 3-5 times per week is a great way to maintain physical fitness, strength, and flexibility.
