What can I do to improve my osteoarthritis and joint health?

Many factors contribute to slowing down as we age, but a lack of exercise should not be one of them. Below are some ways that exercise helps improve osteoarthritis and joint health:

  • It can increase blood flow to cartilage.
  • Strengthen the muscles surrounding your joints, and your joints will carry less weight.
  • Losing weight can reduce the stress on your weight-bearing joints, such as your hips and knees.
  • Make sure you're getting enough rest and physical activity to keep depression and stress at bay; both can lead to an increase in pain levels.

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis because it's known as wear-and-tear arthritis. It develops gradually during the middle to late years of life. The cartilage that protects the ends of your bones gradually wears away, leaving pain and joint stiffness, making it challenging to complete daily activities.

Osteoarthritis is caused by the cartilage covering each end of our bones slowly deteriorating and leaving a rough surface, making it difficult and painful for the bones to move. Conditions like obesity or an old sports injury can damage the joint.

To learn more about joint health and treatment options, contact your provider or call our office for a physical exam. Pending the outcome of the physical exam, X-rays or additional testing may be recommended. Many treatment options exist, such as lifestyle changes, medication, physical therapy, or surgical repair.
