Trevor Moravec, who offers neurology services at KCH, treats many neurological disorders.
There are two major categories of the nervous system:
- the central nervous system, which includes the brain and spinal cord,
- and the peripheral nervous system (the nerves outside the brain and spinal cord).
Testing for neurological disorders or infections may include blood tests, imaging of the brain and spine, an electroencephalograph (EEG), or an electromyogram (EMG).
EEG: An electroencephalogram (EEG) is a test that is utilized to evaluate the electrical activity of the brain. It is commonly used in the setting of suspected seizures. This testing allows for the evaluation and and identification of abnormalities that may suggest and increased risk for seizures or record the electrical activity of the seizure itself.
NCS/EMG: A nerve conduction study (NCS) and electromyogram (EMG) are tested are commonly used to evaluate the peripheral nervous system and muscles. Commonly, this is used in cases of neuropathy, entrapment (e.g, carpal tunnel), and radiculopathy. An NCS allows for the evaluation of nerve health and how they transmit their signals along the length of the nerve to the muscle or back to the spine. An EMG evaluates for abnormalities that can be seen in cases with nerve damage/disease, as well as in cases of muscle disease (myopathy).
