HIM Technician, HIM Department, FT

JOB SUMMARY

Coordinates record reviews and assists requestors with access to and release of health information.  Responds to requests for medical information by performing duties in accordance with established hospital and department policy and state and federal laws.  Reviews and assures the medical record, after discharge, for completeness in compliance with the hospital’s bylaws, Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and state requirements.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Basic computer knowledge.  Typing, Telephone etiquette, general office experience

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

The primary job responsibilities of the Health Information Management Technician are: 

  • Maintenance of the Master Patient Index
  • Respond to Telephone requests from internal and external customers
  • Respond to “walk-in” patient requests for health information
  • Release of health information
  • Transcription support and editing
  • Support Physician record completion
  • Quantitative and Qualitative analysis of medical record

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Retrieval of medical records for clinical units
  • Filing of paper and electronic medical records as needed to provide a smooth search and recovery process for health records.
  • Ability to work continuously with confidential information.
  • Rotate with peers for departmental coverage on the weekend
  • Assist peers with task when the situation warrants.

 

Primary responsibilities may include some or all of the points listed.  Cross training is enforced to maintain customer service.

Requirements Include: 

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE

  • High school graduate or equivalent.

  • One or more years of previous similar hospital experience.
