Department Director, Diagnostic Imaging

JOB SUMMARY

The Department Director of Diagnostic Imaging is responsible for directing all aspects and functions of the Diagnostic Imaging Department in accordance with the laws, regulations, and administrative rulings of governmental organizations and other regulatory and advisory authorities and organizations.The Director is responsible for the care and safety of patients, visitors and staff in the vicinity of radiation generating equipment and radio-active medical materials. This position is directly responsible for ensuring the daily operational status to an agreed upon standard of care for all aspects of the hospital’s diagnostic imaging department.  Department Director of Diagnostic Imaging is responsible for the fiscal viability of diagnostic imaging and for maintaining appropriate profitable departmental operations to ensure financial contribution to the operations of the hospital as identified by the organization’s strategic financial plan (detailed in each fiscal year’s budget). This position is also directly responsible for the development and implementation of policies, plans and programs to assure that all diagnostic imaging services are provided on an uninterrupted daily basis providing 24 hour per day, 7 day per week service throughout the year.  The incumbent will be responsible for strategic planning within the departments and, more globally, to provide the overall organization with an awareness of trends regarding imaging services in a variety of out-patient locations and within an acute-care community hospital setting.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Director must have strong working knowledge of the principles and practices of diagnostic imaging management in an acute-care hospital environment including but not limited to: 

  • Ability to establish and implement diagnostic imaging policies and procedures to meet all legal and regulatory agency requirements.
  • Knowledge and familiarity with necessary medical terminology.
  • Ability to plan, implement, and evaluate all aspects of diagnostic imaging.
  • Ability to evaluate, recommend, and justify (through business planning) capital asset acquisitions to be used in diagnostic imaging operations.
  • Familiarity and experience with full range of age levels required (neonatal through geriatric).
  • Ability to understand hospital functions and organizational dynamics.
  • Ability to plan and manage costs to respond to changing financial requirements and to manage within budgetary requirements to achieve desired results.
  • Ability to develop long-term plans and programs and to evaluate work accomplishments of self and subordinates.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationship with other management staff, employees, physicians, and public.
  • Ability to provide strong leadership direction and perform supervisory responsibilities of a department manager.
  • Ability to present facts and recommendations effectively in oral and written form.
  • Ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines as well as to tolerate stress when dealing with multiple requests and/or conflicting demands from multiple customers

 

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Directly responsible for the overall administration, coordination, and evaluation of the Diagnostic Imaging Department providing services to the hospital and its affiliates.

  • Provide direction, supervision, and assistance to the imaging and treatment staff in the daily performance of their duties. This includes departmental scheduling and payroll reporting responsibility. Multiple cost centers and areas of responsibility are under the direction of this individual including (but not limited to):

    • CAT Scan
    • Radiology
    • Ultrasound
    • MR
    • Mammographery
    • Nuclear Medicine
    • Diagnostic imaging - related business operations.
  • Develop and implement staff development/education plans utilizing staff input and team member coaching, counseling, mentoring, and encouragement of professional growth.
  • Works closely with the department Medical Director to support medical oversight of the department and to evaluate and improve overall process efficiencies.Serves as a liaison between the radiologists and the radiology staff and/or other departments’ staff
  • Conduct timely performance appraisals that contain mutually established goals.
  • Effectively intervene in a timely and appropriate manner when dealing with employee disciplinary issues.
  • Ensure and document technical competency of all department personnel.
  • Ensure appropriate adherence by all parties to regulatory requirements for operation and to ensure proper licensing is maintained at all times.
  • Provide information and gain input from employees by conducting monthly staff meetings.
  • Timely preparation of departmental Capital and Operational Budgets utilizing appropriate data collection and analysis.
  • Manage to achieve financial goals by monitoring volumes, revenues and expenditures according to departmental budget, make appropriate and necessary adjustments to operations as necessary, and report on monthly budget variances.
  • Manages all elements that effect the revenue cycle with regard to billing and reimbursement, such as coding and appropriate use
  • Develop, monitor, and report on Diagnostic Imaging Quality Indicators to identify opportunities for improvement and track improvement efforts. Acts as an advocate for the Quality Process
  • Consistently utilize data and available resources to identify trends when making decisions.
  • Develop and monitor Diagnostic Imaging Services Strategic Plans to include measurable goals and objectives that are consistent with the organization’s strategic plan. Demonstrate a positive attitude and take the initiative to implement changes when appropriate.
  • Ensures that all diagnostic imaging equipment is properly maintained and functioning, maintains vendor relationships and service contracts, and recommendsequipment modifications and/or equipment replacement
  • Provide leadership and support to all levels of the organization to insure all necessary compliance with diagnostic imaging service requirements.
  • Update and/or develop, implement, and enforce Diagnostic Imaging Services policies and procedures and exam protocols.
  • Provide leadership to support the mission and vision of the hospital. This includes exhibiting conduct that exemplifies and promotes the values and goals of the organization.
Requirements Include: 

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field (Master’s preferred)

  • A.R.R.T. registration in at least one field

  • Ohio license to practice in a radiologic fieldrequired

  • A minimum of five (5) years experience in diagnostic imaging functions with:

    • At least three (3) years’ recent management experience in diagnostic imaging strongly preferred, OR

    • Recent equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the ability to demonstrate the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

  • Experience providing diagnostic imaging management in a multi-location setting is preferred
