A 3D mammogram or tomosynthesis exam uses complex computing to convert digital breast images into a series of very thin layers of tissue (1mm thick). By building essentially a “book with pages,” our board certified radiologist can see breast tissue detail in a way never before possible. Instead of viewing all the structures of breast tissue superimposed over each other in a flat image, the doctor can examine the tissue one millimeter at a time. Tiny details are more clearly visible since they are no longer hidden by the tissue above and below.
The time it takes to complete a 3D mammogram is nearly identical to the 2D version. The difference is found in how the machine take images and in the results.
Due to enhanced visibility of the tissues, advanced 3D mammography enables clinicians to detect 20-65% more breast cancer, compared to 2D mammography. 3D technology also reduces stressful call-backs because suspicious areas in a patient’s breast may be looked at immediately and in greater detail.
